Painted somewhere near The Hague along the seashore, Vincent refers to this and another painting of dunes several times, telling Theo in that one painting shows "lumps of dune earth." A few days later in a letter dated 14 August 1882 he again mentions these works stating "I’ve also painted a big piece of dune ground — impasted — and densely painted."
