One of a series of small still life paintings Vincent did in this period, there is scant reference to them in his letters other than mentioning his teaching lessons with some local people, and that they were working on similar paintings. Some of the other still life paintings from this period are interesting as they are recto-verso paintings, or painted on both sides of the canvas.

While the paintings are similar in size and content making any references to them in Vincent's letters a bit vague, he was enthusiastic as he mentions several times painting still life after still life, and teaching the locals how to paint a bit too. One of his clients, a man named Hermans, had quite a collection of antiques and such, and these are the ones we see in Vincent's paintings from this period.
