One of a series of small still life paintings Vincent did in this period, there is scant reference to them in his letters other than mentioning his teaching lessons with some local people, and that they were working on similar paintings. One of the more interesting things about this work is that it is a recto-verso painting, or painted on both sides of the canvas. The de la Faille catalog number is F 178r, the small 'r' meaning recto, or front of the painting. Two years later in the autumn of 1886 Vincent used this same canvas for one of his earlier self-portraits, painting on the reverse side, referred to as verso, and assigned the catalog number F 178v. The painting is Self-portrait (F 178v, JH 1198). We have also included an image of this painting below the provenance details of the still life.
