Four van Gogh Paintings Auctioned Over Last Weekend Bring In $63,892,000
7 NOVEMBER 2015
![]() | Sotheby's held their Impressionist and Modern Art Auction in New York City 4 - 6 November 2015. Three paintings and one drawing created by van Gogh were successfully bid on. Portrait of Marcelle Roulin, an oil on canvas portrait of the postman's daughter done in 1888, sold for U.S $7,642,000. Postman Roulin and his entire family sat for many portraits with van Gogh. A small pen and ink on paper, 5 1/4 by 6 1/2 inches, of the Arles Public Garden drawn in 1888 went for U.S. $1,570,000. U.S. $670,000 seems a bargain for the 1883 oil on paper on panel painting Landscape With Windswept Trees, but the final sale price was more than double the high end estimate of only U.S. $300,000. But most of the attention went to the 1889 Landscape Under a Stormy Sky, painted in Arles in 1889, one year before his death. U.S. $54,010,000 was the final price, a bit more than the $50m low estimate but much lower than the predicted high of $70m. |
